PhD student Yichun Zhao was awarded an NSERC CGS-D Scholarship for his research on enhanced information accessibility for people who are blind or low-vision.

From February 22nd to 24th, 2024, the collaborative efforts of the Design For People Lab (DFP Lab) from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the VIXI Lab from the University of Victoria (UVic) culminated in a visualization-centered hackathon at UVic's campus, titled "VIS4ALL".

PhD student Sabrina Lakhdhir was awarded an NSERC PGS-D Scholarship for her research on personalization of wearable technologies and data.

VIXI Lab were the hosts of the 2023 CHCCS/SCDHM Graphics Interface conference, the only conference for computer graphics and human computer interaction. The conference was held on the UVic campus in Victoria, from May 30 to June 2.

The University of Victoria’s Association for Computing Machinery Student Chapter is a UVic club that was founded and is currently led by a group of VIXI students. Their inaugural event, an interdisciplinary speaker panel hosted four professors from across the University of Victoria and was recently spotlighted in the December 2022 ACM Chapter Newsletter.

We are very happy to welcome Hamid Mansoor, who joined us this September from WPI as a post-doctoral fellow working with VIXI. Hamid brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the group.

Miguel Nacenta presents at ACM SIGGRAPH (the top conference in graphics and one of the most prestigious in Computer Science) the work that Johannes Lang and he have done in Infotypography. They looked at how people perceive typographic parameters. This could support the use of these parameters to represent information.

PhD student Adam Binks from the University of St Andrews visits the VIXI lab and gives a talk on "What are representational transformations, and how can our tools support them"? The talk is in ECS660 on Wednesday, July 27th, 2022 at 12:30.

Dr. Rhyd Lewis visits the VIXI lab abd gives a talk on Graphs and Street Networks - Tools for Analysis and Visualisation on July 22nd, 2022.

Dr. Fiona Carroll visits the VIXI lab and gives a talk on Aesthetic Interaction - Understanding why we need to consider the aesthetic in the design of interactive user experiences.

We were glad to host Te-Yen Wu, a Ph.D. candidate from Dartmouth College, where he presented his current thesis works on Human-Material Interactions. He also shared his knowledge with some of our research-minded students.

Mona is the first VIXI student to complete a MSc project. She successfully completed her project report on Abstract and Metaphoric visualization of emotionally sensitive data.

New research and a new tool allowed us to investigate how people transform complex networks of ideas into linear textual structures. The results have been published at the International Journal of Human-Computer Studies.

We are excited about our new research space and the endless possibilities for studying and designing new technology for the changeful nature of life and society!

Undergraduate student Thomas Roy has been granted an Undergraduate Student Research Award from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) to work on novel interfaces to generate complex documents.

Undergraduate student Paul Henderson, working in collaboration with Miguel Nacenta just completed a Jamie Cassels Undergraduate Research Award (JCURA) at the VIXI lab. His project has to do with memory in documents.

Xiyao Wang joins VIXI as a Mitacs Elevate Postdoctoral Fellow; he will be working on visualizing information in situ with 3D photorealistic environments together with LlamaZOO Inc.
